Previously known as Papillon Street, after Pierre Jacques Papillon, who was brought from Rouen in France in 1785 by George Macintosh to oversee a Turkey-red dyeing establishment. The process became such a phenomena that by 1801 it had reached the hallowed pages of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, who referred to Turkey red as "that beautiful red dye which distinguishes the cotton manufactured in the Ottoman Empire". Latterly the building took on greater proportions in the hands of Henry Monteith & Co.
This French Street property known as the Meiklejohn Building has just been completely renovated. Part of the building is being leased out and is being used as a Boxing Gymnasium by a long standing tenant of ours who formerly used our Poplin Street premises. Poplin Street was taken under the Compulsory Purchase Order by Glasgow City Council and is due to be demolished due to the M74 Extension.
